Beach meets Global in South Carolina

We recently spent a week in beautiful, sunny Kiawah Island, SC, a favorite vacation spot. We usually rent a home not far from the beach. As one would expect, these houses are usually decorated in a typical beach style making guests feel right at home and relaxed.

Browsing through a recent edition of Architectural Digest I came across this private home in Folly Beach, SC. The style of the decor I find appealing. Not only does it reflect the environment, creating a home to relax in, but it does so with a global appeal which I love. It's a different approach to a beach theme. A place where old meets new, antique meets contemporary, different styles and colors are blended harmoniously.

Who wouldn't want to spend a summer vacation in such a home! Does this style appeal to you?

The Kids and Artwork Glimpse

Emily turned 10 yesterday. My kids are growing up fast. Any time I spend with them is precious. I plan to spend the day doing regular stuff with them like going to the library, getting rid of the last school year paraphernalia, buying next year's school supplies, and so on. Biking would have been on the list but the heatwave continues. We spent last week on Kiawah Island, SC where the water was perfect - would love to be by that beach today.

My kids are very creative. They love drawing, painting, coloring, sketching, writing (mini) scripts, composing little tunes, you name it. I wanted to give you a glimpse of some artwork they created a few years ago (with assistance). The process will be shared with you later, but for now I leave you with this picture.

Have a great weekend!

Outdoor Rooms to Dream About

I wish I had a covered outdoor area or an area I could convert from an indoor space to an outdoor space instantly. Really, an indoor-outdoor room.

It would be the perfect setting to entertain, read a book, relax after a swim (if I had a pool), take in the view or do absolutely nothing! I have come across many pictures of inspiration, some to just dream about.

The Bootstrap Project

Not too long ago I came across The Bootstrap Project. The goal of this program is to enable local artisans from around the world to maintain their crafts and customs, which are centuries old . This program showcases some unique and interesting pieces.

These artisans are true masters at their craft. The profits of items sold go back to them and their communities to help further education and development in their areas of expertise. In return, buyers get superior quality, authentic artisanal pieces.

The stories of the individual artisans are compelling.
Robiya Qayumova
Meet Robiya Quyumova,  a mother to 4 girls. She has passed on the art of sewing kurpachas and pillows to them and they are now the fifth generation to be a part of this traditional craft!

I was keen to buy Robiya's kurpacha (a colorful sitting mattress), with it's beautiful ikat pattern and coloration. And yes, I saw the blue and green combination (reference to yesterday's post) and had to have it!

A kurpacha is traditionally used in Tajikistan as a chair, on the floor in a pile for guests of honor or individually. Well, I did purchase the kurpacha. I shall share it with you in a different post.

The Effects of Blue and Green Together in Interior Spaces

I am drawn to shades of blue and green together in a space. This combination is pleasing to the eye because the colors are adjacent on the color wheel and therefore together they are calming. One is reminded of nature; it is about bringing the outdoors inside. Whether they are used on a large scale, in small doses or with a third color I find this combination pleasing to the eye, no matter what shades are incorporated.

In this elegant space, nature adds a dose of green to offset the blue-brown color palette.

In this beachside bunkroom in South Carolina, a pop of solid color against the small-scale print anchors the space while still keeping the mood light and the look cohesive. The rug picks up on the other blues so that the patterns can coordinate, not clash.

A space with more saturated blue and green for dramatic effect.
