Wine Bottle Lamps

I love pieces of furniture or any accessory that is unusual - something one does not come across every day. This is a great upcyling idea by John Meng. Have you seen these neat lamps?  They would be perfect for a bar, on a desk or really any space begging for a great conversation piece.

I love the various options with the design of a lamp using the wine bottles. I am also drawn to the warm glow of the ambient lighting.

I think my favorite lamp would probably be the horizontal one although I love the idea of having a bottle upside-down as well.

Which one is your favorite? Could you see yourself using one of these in your own home?

Thinking About This Chandelier

My almost 14-year-old's room has been undergoing some gradual redecorating for the past year or so. I had shared some ideas for it here last year. This chandelier, purchased about 8 years ago from The Bombay Company, has stayed in this room and was perfect for the little girls' room - both girls shared it for some time - which was painted in Benjamin Moore's Cotton Candy. Now it is in Behr's Harmonious.

Clearly this fixture, as it looks right now with the pink crystals, does now quite fit the room. I had decided that this would be replaced with something more suitable, teen-appropriate, updated.

The original shades were a cotton candy pink and I replaced them a couple of years ago with these ivory ones.

Over the past few months I have come across some very interesting DIY light fixtures which I would love to attempt to create. These I have pinned on Pinterest.

I love the texture of these hemp pendants.

And this fun and colorful piece created with crayons and wax paper.

Due to time constraints and because I want to finally create the absolutely perfect piece for her and because I am yet undecided, the original chandelier is still here.

So I have been looking at it with a different eye. The mini shades are a little crooked because I kept taking them off and putting them back on as I determined the look of the fixture without the shades on.

I will keep you posted on my decision.

Meanwhile, I received this flyer in the mail along with my recent Con Ed bill. It has outlined some important points  - Electric Safety: What You Need To Know - some of which I were not aware of. I thought I would share just a few with you here:
  • Don't use appliances during an electric storm. Unless it is an emergency, do not use phones with cords. (I knew only to switch off the central air system during a storm - if lighting strikes the outdoor unit when it is on, that could potentially blow the entire system causing major damage and $$ in repairs).
  • Don't place electric cords under carpets or furniture.
  • Never staple or nail cords to walls or baseboards.
  • A tear-drop shaped darkening by an outlet or wall plate may indicate heat build-up.
  • Unplug unused appliances. (This one I am aware of and I always unplug the toaster and electric kettle when not in use. I know someone whose hairdryer caught fire because it was left plugged in - she was at work - this caused a fire in the apartment).
Additional information available at
Con Ed www.conEd.com,
Electric Safety Foundation www.esfi.org,
Consumer Products Safety Commission www.cpsc.gov

Sometimes in an emergency or when we are in hurry or even in the name of good decorating and design - like wires under carpeting -  little things can be overlooked and can lead to potentially dangerous situations. Be safe.

The Spun Lamp - Lighting with Personality

Have you seen these Spun Lamps? They are the creation of the Evie Group, a Sydney, Australia-based design studio which produces housewares, furniture and  lighting.

They are chic and I am sure you will agree, quite visually stunning.

The design of this unusual light fixture epitomizes simplicity which successfully masks the real complex nature of these pieces. The inspiration for this Spun Lamp stems from the traditional top which it mimics.  It is available in silver or brass mirror finishes, and can be used facing up or down (depending on lighting preferences) with the wiring designed to include the ability to be spun around the base or loose, as shown below.

Hung from the ceiling in multiples to create visual interest at any height.
Even more versatility as optional outdoor lighting.

Well, what do you think? Aren't these truly amazing and so unique? I could see these in various decor styles. For more information on these and to view other interesting products by the Evie Group visit them at evie.

Today I am linking up my Safari Nursery Design Board to the Roomspiration blog hop and link party at a la mode. Do check it out along with all the other great nursery creations submitted by others.

Floral Chandelier - A Work in Progress

I have been working on a fun project for a couple of months. It is being worked on as and when I am able to. This light fixture (pictured below in current location) was bought about twelve years ago for our dining room when we moved from Manhattan to the suburbs.
We have definitely outgrown it but it suited us just fine back then (twelve years ago). The furniture in the room was also different at the time.

We extended the back of the house about six years ago. As a result, some furniture changed and this chandelier did not suit the room any longer. It was moved through different rooms (eat-in kitchen area, old study) as a fill-in where needed (until something more appropriate was found).  The old study is now Emily's room. Here is another picture of how the fixture looked a couple of months ago.
As you can see it did not work in this room. It either had to be replaced or I had to change the look of it somehow. At first, I decided I would try to embellish it. It had to tie-in to the overall decor of the room and the colors of the decal. For more on the decal  go here.

Strands of beads was my initial idea. Then, while browsing through Michaels one day I caught sight of some fabric petals like these green ones while walking through the wedding aisle.

I was heading to the paint section I almost walked right by them. I started to think  floral! There were blue, red and pink petals, too. I bought the pink ones first. I wanted to see the color in Emily's room with everything else in it. I went back later for the green petals.

This is how the petals look (not actual size)

I removed the frosted shades from the fixture. Glue gun in hand, I started working on them at the kitchen table creating these floral pieces, just eye-balling the pattern as I went along. I started with a layer of the petals at the top and worked my way down. Fortunately, due to the shape of the shades, this was not difficult.

I tested the look during the day..

and I tested it at night.
I love how the color changes with the light on!

I needed to cover up the base and build each flower out some more so I purchased the green petals to add on some "leaves" after I added on a fourth layer of pink petals.

I have been back to Michaels several times while working on different projects (constantly multitasking). Again, same aisle by chance, I happened upon some tulle which I decided I could use to wrap around the metal in order to soften the look of the fixture in some way. I realized this could help form a less rigid base for some "stems" I could create with leftover green petals.

Truly this chandelier has been evolving with no real plan or design.

It has been a busy summer so far. The wrapped tulle lies within the base of the chandelier when I am on a break from this project. I am further along with it than the picture below indicates. I wanted the piece to "grow" gradually.  Also, I wanted to find the right fabric/material/bits and pieces to add to it with constant approval from "Client" Em.

I hope to be done soon. I have found some pretty finishing touches for this chandelier which I will share with you in its entirety when it is completed.

Stay tuned!

Do you have a fun project you are currently working on? I'd love to hear about it!
